Northern & Central Italy

ROME

Rome (Latin: Roma) is the capital city of Italy and is Italy's largest and most populous city with a metropolitan area of about 4 million inhabitants. It is located in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula, on the Tiber river. Rome's history as a city spans over two and a half thousand years, as one of the founding cities of Western Civilization. Even outside of the history of the Roman Empire, Rome has a significant place in the story of Christianity up to the present day as the home of the Roman Catholic Church.

As one of the few major European cities that escaped World War II relatively unscathed, central Rome remains essentially Renaissance and Baroque in character. Rome is the third-most-visited tourist destination in the European Union. Visit city of Rome official website

FLORENCE

Florence (Italian: Firenze) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany, and of the province of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany. The city lies on the Arno River and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. It was long under the de facto rule of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic centre of Florence continues to attract millions of tourists each year. Visit city of Florence official website

Towns of Tuscany

PISA & LUCCA

Pisa is a city in Tuscany, central Italy, on the right bank of the mouth of the Arno River on the Ligurian Sea. It is the capital city of the Province of Pisa. The city is known worldwide for its famous bell tower. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the cathedral and is the third oldest structure in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) after the cathedral and the baptistry. Although intended to stand vertically, the tower began leaning to the southeast soon after the onset of construction in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction.

Lucca is a city in Tuscany, northern central Italy, situated on the river Serchio in a fertile plain near (but not on) the Ligurian Sea. It is the capital city of the Province of Lucca. Among other reasons, it is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls (although the city has expanded beyond the wall's boundaries).

SIENA & SAN GIMIGNANO

Siena is a city in Tuscany, Italy. It is the capital of the province of Siena. The historic centre of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. The Palio di Siena is a traditional medieval horse race run around the Piazza del Campo twice each year, on July 2 and August 16. The event is attended by large crowds, and is widely televised and was even featured in the James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several kilometers outside the town. The town also is known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, grown in the area.

Volterra is a town in the Tuscany region of Italy. Some of the main sites include a Roman theatre and the Etruscan Museum, with thousands of funeral urns dating back to the Hellenistic and Archaic periods.Volterra is an important location in Stephenie Meyer's bestselling Twilight series. In the books, Volterra is home to the Volturi, a coven of powerful and ancient vampires.

San Marino
San Marino is a country in the Apennine Mountains. It is a landlocked enclave, completely surrounded by Italy. One of the European microstates, San Marino has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe.

San Marino is the oldest sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, having been founded on 3 September 301 by Marinus of Rab, a Christian stonemason fleeing the religious persecution of Roman Emperor Diocletian. The Constitution of San Marino, enacted in 1600, is the world's oldest constitution still in effect. Visit San Marino's official website

The Coasts: East & West
Cinque Terre
is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. "The Five Lands" comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park. The Cinque Terre is noted for its beauty. Over centuries, man has carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible "modern" development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages and cars can not reach it from the outside. It is a very popular tourist destination. A local train from La Spezia to Genoa connects the "five lands" as well as a walking trail. The tracks runs most of the distance in a tunnel for the full distance between Riomaggiore and Monterosso. The train does emerge from the tunnel along the way and there are quick glimpses of the Mediterranean sea.Visit an unofficial website dedicated to showcasing the Cinque Terre

Slovenia

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and its largest city. Throughout its history, it has been influenced by its geographic position at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin and Slavic culture. According to the celebrated Greek legend, the hero Jason struck down a monster near Ljubljana. This monster was the dragon that today is present on the city's coat of arms and flag. Several winged dragons also decorate the Ljubljanica-crossing Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most), often regarded as the most beautiful bridge produced by the Vienna Secession..

The city lies on Lake Lugano and its warm summers, and the fact that in recent years it has attracted an ever growing number of celebrities, entertainers and successful athletes has given it the nickname of the "Monte Carlo of Switzerland".

The Bernina Express is an express train which connects Chur to Poschiavo and Tirano crossing the Swiss Alps from north to south, using the Albula / Bernina Line. The trainit is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train but rather in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for a long duration travel.
